Karlobag is a considerably old settlement, having had various names throughout its history. It is named after the Austrian emperor Karl VI who declared Karlobad to an imperial, royal town. There is a number of sacral monuments in Karlobag. The most renowned are the Fort Fortia or Kava dated from the 18th century, the Capuchin Monastery with the parish church of the Holy Joseph of the year 1713, the church of the Holy Borromeo as well as the Maria church.
